Roy Lichtenstein challenges the traditional notions of high art. Amused, distanced and critical all at once, without becoming cynical. His comic book appropriation in Whaam! can be read as a parody of military glory. The comic book that shapes the minds of young boys, has the same effect as the propagated reports of military glory that encourage support for conflict. A desensitised depiction of an explosion mimics our emotional detachment from the violence we see so often on the news.
